Board of Directors

The MSUACGNY Board of Directors is a group of 17 local Spartan volunteers. We work together, and with other local Alumni, to plan social, educational, athletic and entertainment events throughout the year. If you’re interested in becoming a Board Member, or would like to help out with one of our committees, please drop us a note. We’d love to hear from you!

Jason Johnson

Jason Johnson – President

Jason was born and raised just outside of Detroit. After receiving his B.A. in History from Michigan State in 2003, Jason made his way to Boston where he earned his J.D. from New England School of Law and his LL.M. in Taxation from Boston University School of Law. While in Boston, Jason met his wife and honorary Spartan, Lindsay.

A job offer to work in a firm’s International Tax Group brought Jason down to live in New York. Now, Jason works for a Fortune 500 financial services company as an in-house International Tax Attorney. He lives in Bronxville, New York. Jason is a retired U.S. Marine who in his free time enjoys spending time with his family (wife + pug), studying military history, and shouting “Go Green!” at complete strangers wearing Michigan State gear.

Britteny Dee – Vice President

Britteny was born and raised in the small town of Freeland, MI. After four amazing years in East Lansing, she graduated from Michigan State with a B.A. in journalism in 2013 and immediately moved to New York City to start her career. After several years in the fashion industry, Britteny now works as the social media coordinator for Medical Daily and freelances at various other publications.

While attending MSU, Britteny was involved in a number of clubs and student organizations, including The State News, the Fashion Design Student Association, the Retailing Student Association, Michigan Interscholastic Press Association, Women’s Initiative for Student Leadership and the Spartan Ski Club. Britteny now lives in Astoria and enjoys showing off her Spartan spirit with other alumni in New York City.

Hanna Porterfield – Vice President

Hanna is a Spartan for life, but has always been a city girl at heart. Growing up in Michigan as a second-generation Spartan she had arguably the best four years in East Lansing. Very involved in extracurriculars, she had opportunities to attend all sorts of events on campus and shared her experiences as a Spartan Ambassador giving tours. After interning in Manhattan in summer 2013, Hanna finished her degree in Advertising and Public Relations, had an amazing senior-year of sports (Rose Bowl win!) and moved back to New York City just two weeks after graduation, in May 2014. She now works at Development Counsellors International, a place marketing agency for economic development and tourism.

Roni O'Connor

Roni O’Connor – Treasurer

Roni was born in Detroit, grew up in Mount Vernon, NY, and returned to Michigan earning her BA in Elementary Education from Michigan State in 1964, followed by an MS and Professional Diploma in Counselor Education from Fordham University.

Roni worked as an elementary school teacher and guidance counselor and is now retired. Roni has served as Treasurer of our club since 2006 and presently serves as National Alumni Board President. In addition to “all things MSU,” Roni enjoys skiing, gardening, needlework, and being with friends and family. One of her favorite MSU activities is volunteering for Grandparents University. Roni resides with her husband, Michael, in Port Chester, NY.

Bob Kobel

Bob Kobel – Secretary

A 1961 Communications graduate, Bob did military service, worked in radio and television broadcasting as well as federal government and private sector media relations. Now retired, Bob has been a board member for about 20 years, serving as our Secretary for the last decade. Bob is a founding member of the Scholarship Committee and also helped develop the Club’s by-laws.

Larry Alterman

Larry Alterman

Born in Manhattan, Larry found his way to the Banks of the Red Cedar and fell in love with Michigan State. He has been active with our club since the early 1990’s and has served as Treasurer, Vice President and President. In 2007, after a 6 year work transfer to Arkansas, Larry moved back into the NY area and was once again Vice President until June 2017. Larry feels his most important work is raising money for the endowed scholarship fund for MSU students from our area, he recently said, “Everyone should be as lucky as I have been to have the opportunity to receive a Michigan State education.”

Alicia Bowerman

Alicia Bowerman

A native of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Alicia now finds herself living in Hell’s Kitchen and loving it. She has a love for fashion and creativity. A new passion is distance running. Alicia has served on the board for a couple of years and is our “Young Alumni Representative.” She helps to remind us how important it is to remember what it’s like when Spartans move from East Lansing to NYC.

Brian Catanese, Board of Directors. Michigan State University Alumni Club of Greater New York

Brian Catanese

Born on Long Island, Brian grew up in a small town in Western Massachusetts. After attending soccer camps at Michigan State, he knew that East Lansing was the place for him. Brian graduated from MSU in 2001 with a BA in Political Science and received his law degree from MSU in 2004. Brian and his wife, Katie, met their third year of law school and were married at the Alumni Chapel a year later. As an undergraduate, he represented MSU at model United Nations competitions as a member of the International Relations Organization.

Professionally, he has been in private practice for the past eight years as a trial and appellate attorney. Brian and Katie live in Maplewood, New Jersey with their two children and two dogs. They can be seen regularly at Blondies cheering on the Spartans.

Pat Donohue

Patrick Donohue

Patrick Donohue – Board Member since July 2008.  Co-chair of Communications Committee.  Team member for the bi-weekly generation of our club newsletters, club’s database growth and maintenance, and club web site updates.  Scholarship Committee member.  Represent MSU at northern NJ College Fairs since 1994.  Both daughters are MSU grads.

Greg Hauser - Director, MSU Alumni Club of Greater New York

Greg Hauser

Born in Canandaigua, NY, Greg grew up in Rochester. He attended Michigan State and earned Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Zoology with an undergraduate minor in German. After leaving MSU, Greg moved to NYC to attend the NYU School of Law and has been practicing law here since 1981. Greg was President of our club from 2001 to 2014, except for one year when he served as President of the National Board of MSUAA. As devoted a Spartan as you will find, Greg has given much effort to the local alumni club we have today. Greg lives on the Upper West Side, a little over two short blocks from Blondies.
