Recap: 2018 Wine Dinner

More than 50 guests gathered in an elegant private room at Gallaghers Steakhouse in Midtown Manhattan for our Twentieth Annual Wine Tasting and Scholarship Dinner on Friday, May 11th. The diverse group of alumni from the Greater New York area and elsewhere throughout the country were welcomed by Greg Hauser, President of the Spartan Alumni Foundation of Greater NYC, and Jason Johnson, President of the MSU Alumni Club of Greater New York.

Throughout the night, guests networked and made new friends while enjoying a delicious four-course dinner that was paired with red and white wine selections courtesy of Charles Krug Winery and former club board member Bill McPharlin Jr., who educated attendees about the history of the winery and the wines served with dinner. Guests also welcomed Bob Thomas, the recently appointed Interim Executive Director of the MSU Alumni Association. Bob also serves as the Assistant Vice President for Advancement Marketing & Communications.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award to Michigan State’s Fourteenth President, Dr. Clifton Wharton, Jr, and his wife Dolores Wharton. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to visit with the Whartons and honor them for their service to not only Michigan State, but to the states of Michigan and New York, the country and the world.

The Greater NY Alumni Club Endowed Scholarship has impacted fifteen Michigan State students from the Greater NY Area. The current scholarship recipients “visited” the dinner guests in a wonderful video from campus. Each student talked about what the scholarship meant to him, and each ended saying, “Thank you NY Spartans!”

The evening culminated with an exciting live auction, run by Foundation President Greg Hauser. Auction items included a Dantonio autographed football, an Izzo autographed basketball, VIP tickets to the Tonight Show with Stephen Colbert, a dinner-theater package, a seven-night stay at an historic Martha’s Vineyard cottage and more.

Dinner and auction proceeds support the Greater NY Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Spartan Alumni Foundation of Greater NYC. The fund helps support students from our area who attend MSU.

Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s dinner and to all who helped make the event a tremendous success. We hope to see you all again next year.
